Common psychiatric terms
plain-language definitions

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)
Depression that has not responded adequately to two or more antidepressant medications at therapeutic doses and duration.
Pharmacogenomics
Testing how your genes affect the way you metabolize and respond to specific medications — enabling more targeted prescribing.
Augmentation Strategy
Adding a second medication to enhance or extend the effect of a primary medication — a common approach in treatment-resistant cases.
Deprescribing
The thoughtful, supervised process of reducing or stopping medications that no longer provide meaningful benefit.
Bipolar II
A form of bipolar disorder characterized by depressive episodes and hypomania (milder elevated mood) — frequently misdiagnosed as unipolar depression.
Measurement-Based Care
Using validated rating scales (PHQ-9, GAD-7) at regular intervals to track treatment progress objectively — not just through clinical impression.
Perinatal Psychiatry
