FAQs | Dr. Gabriella Farkas

About Dr. Farkas & Credentials

What makes Dr. Farkas different from other psychiatrists? +

Dr. Farkas brings a rare combination of credentials: MD/PhD in neuroscience (summa cum laude), training at one of four NIH research centers for schizophrenia, and direct involvement in pharmaceutical medication development (cariprazine). This combination of scientific depth, research center training, and pharmaceutical expertise is virtually unprecedented in private practice.

She specializes in treatment-resistant conditions—cases where standard care hasn't worked. Her comprehensive 30-60 minute initial evaluations and measurement-based monitoring ensure accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment planning.

Is Dr. Farkas board-certified? +

Yes, Dr. Farkas is board-certified in psychiatry with specializations in adult and geriatric psychiatry. She maintains active medical licenses in South Carolina, New York, and Virginia.

What is cariprazine and why does it matter that Dr. Farkas helped develop it? +

Cariprazine is an antipsychotic medication FDA-approved for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It's considered a gold-standard treatment with favorable side effect profile compared to many other antipsychotics.

Dr. Farkas's involvement in cariprazine's development means she understands the medication's mechanism of action, pharmacology, and clinical applications at a level most prescribers don't possess. This enables more sophisticated prescribing and better management of its use.

Telehealth & Virtual Appointments

How does telehealth work? +

All appointments are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing. You'll need a device with a camera (computer, tablet, or smartphone), internet connection, and a private space for the appointment.

You'll receive a secure link via email before your appointment. Simply click the link at your scheduled time and connect directly to Dr. Farkas.

Is telehealth as effective as in-person visits? +

Research shows that telehealth psychiatric care is equally effective as in-person visits for most conditions. The key is clear communication, good video and audio quality, and a private, comfortable setting.

Dr. Farkas conducts the same comprehensive evaluations and provides the same level of care via telehealth as would occur in-person. The clinical depth and expertise don't change—only the delivery method.

What do I need for a telehealth appointment? +

  • A device with camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone)
  • Stable internet connection
  • A private, quiet space where you won't be interrupted
  • A clear view of your face on camera

Test your camera and audio before the appointment to ensure everything works smoothly.

Are telehealth appointments confidential and secure? +

Yes, absolutely. Dr. Farkas uses secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing with military-grade encryption. All sessions are private and confidential, protected by the same privacy standards as in-person visits.

The video platform does not record appointments without your consent, and your personal health information is never shared with third parties.

Insurance & Payment

What insurance do you accept? +

What is a superbill? +

Psychiatric Treatment & Medications

Will I definitely need medication? +

Not necessarily. Dr. Farkas recommends treatment based on your specific diagnosis, symptom severity, and individual circumstances. Some conditions respond well to therapy and lifestyle changes alone; others benefit significantly from medication; many require combination treatment.

During your evaluation, Dr. Farkas will discuss whether medication is recommended for your specific situation, explain the reasoning, and discuss alternatives.

How long do psychiatric medications take to work? +

This varies by medication class:

  • Antidepressants: 4-8 weeks for full benefit (improvement may begin in 1-2 weeks)
  • Stimulants: 30 minutes to 1 hour (fast acting)
  • Anti-anxiety medications: Varies by type (benzodiazepines work within hours; buspiron takes 2-4 weeks)
  • Mood stabilizers: 2-6 weeks for full effect

Dr. Farkas will explain the expected timeline for your specific medication during your appointment.

What if my medication isn't working? +

If a medication isn't working after an appropriate trial period, there are multiple options:

  • Adjust the dose
  • Switch to a different medication in the same class
  • Switch to a medication with a different mechanism
  • Add an augmentation agent
  • Combine multiple medications

Dr. Farkas's pharmaceutical research background and treatment-resistant expertise make her particularly skilled at developing alternative strategies when first-line approaches don't work.

What about medication side effects? +

Side effects are a legitimate concern. Dr. Farkas's "do no harm" philosophy prioritizes minimizing side effects through:

  • Careful medication selection considering your side effect tolerance
  • Starting at lower doses and gradually increasing
  • Regular monitoring and proactive side effect management
  • Adjusting medications or doses when side effects are problematic
  • Adding medications to mitigate specific side effects when appropriate

Some side effects improve with time; others can be managed with adjustments. Always discuss side effect concerns with Dr. Farkas—they're important information guiding treatment decisions.

How long will I need to take psychiatric medication? +

This depends entirely on your diagnosis and response. Some people benefit from short-term medication for acute episodes and then discontinue. Others have chronic conditions requiring long-term treatment.

Dr. Farkas discusses realistic expectations during your evaluation and throughout treatment. The goal is always the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration while maintaining stability and quality of life.

Before Your First Appointment

What should I bring or prepare for my first appointment? +

Helpful to have available:

  • List of current medications (including doses and frequencies)
  • List of any supplements or herbs you're taking
  • Previous psychiatric evaluation reports or records
  • List of previous medications you've tried (especially any negative reactions)
  • Insurance card
  • Any questions or concerns you want to discuss

Dr. Farkas will ask detailed questions during your appointment, so having this information helps make the evaluation more efficient and comprehensive.

What happens during my first appointment? +

Your comprehensive initial evaluation will include:

  • Detailed psychiatric history and current symptoms
  • Medical history and any medical conditions
  • Complete medication history (current and past)
  • Family psychiatric history
  • Substance use history
  • Social and occupational functioning assessment
  • Discussion of previous treatment responses
  • Diagnostic formulation and explanation
  • Discussion of treatment options and recommendations

The initial appointment is 30-60 minutes allowing thorough assessment. You'll leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis and the recommended treatment plan.

Should I stop my current medications before seeing Dr. Farkas? +

No—please do not stop medications without medical guidance. Continue taking your current medications as prescribed until Dr. Farkas discusses a different plan with you.

Abruptly stopping psychiatric medications can be unsafe and may cause withdrawal effects or symptom worsening. Dr. Farkas will discuss any medication changes during or after your first appointment.

What if I'm in crisis before my appointment? +

If you're in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide:

  • Call 988 (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) available 24/7
  • Text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line)
  • Go to your nearest emergency room or call 911

These crisis resources are available immediately. Please use them. Dr. Farkas is here to help, but crisis situations require immediate, specialized emergency support.
